Four safety checks from top to bottom
-
Front-facing motion sensor: A dedicated motion sensor constantly scans for cats near the litter box entrance and lets Luma know when the coast is clear.
-
Sensitive weight sensors: If Luma’s four weight sensors detect anything over 0.88 lb (400 g) inside, on the rim or on top of the device, Luma will pause cleaning.
-
Inward-facing camera with cat recognition: An inward-facing camera uses AI-powered recognition to confirm that no cats on hands are present.
- Anti-pinch protection: Capacitive sensors along the entrance rim detect hands or cats within 3–4 cm while the litter basket is rotating — pausing the cycle before anything gets too close. And with the latest firmware update, Luma is even more sensitive to force. It will pause at contact and reverse direction, helping curious cats avoid pinching.

Special safety precautions for special circumstances
-
For kittens and pregnant/lactating cats: If you have a kitten or pregnant cat, you already know they need special care. That’s true with their Luma Smart Litter Box too. For any cat that’s under 6 months old weighing less than 2.2 lb (1 kg), turn off Luma’s auto clean function and use the manual clean button in the app or on your device instead.
-
For children and other pets: We've also included a Child Lock feature to enhance safety in homes with children and other pets. When Luma’s Child Lock is on, the buttons on the device are disabled to prevent children and pets from accidentally pressing them to trigger a cleaning cycle. The Child Lock feature is turned off by default. You can activate it easily, anytime in the Luma settings on your Petlibro app.
-
For extra curious cats: You always have options for when Luma cleans the litter. If you have an extra curious cat, you may want to use scheduled cleanings so Luma only cleans at specific times. Or you can turn off auto clean and use the manual clean button in the app or on your device when you need it. If your cat likes to push buttons, we also recommend turning on the Child Lock feature in the app. Whatever cleaning mode you choose, you can check Luma’s livestream anytime to watch it do its job.
Safety Testing
Safety was our top priority when developing this product. Luma underwent rigorous lab testing, undergoing multiple safety checks over 75,000 times. To ensure long-term stability, testing of Luma's key components exceeded 7,700 hours. Additionally, Luma was tested in-homes, accumulating over 2,889 days of operation in real-life environments, with zero injuries.
Please note, Luma’s anti-pinch mechanism is designed to respond to firm, sustained resistance, similar to what would be encountered if a pet or solid object were present. Soft items like stuffed animals or pillows compress easily and disperse pressure, so they do not create the consistent force required to trigger the anti-pinch mechanism. In contrast, rigid or semi-rigid objects maintain their shape and apply sustained resistance, which is why they reliably activate the sensor as intended.
We hope we’ve answered any questions or concerns you have about safety features on the new Luma Smart Litter Box. With its always-on, four-check system and extra safety precautions, you can relax knowing that your cat is safe. You’re not just getting smarter, more convenient pet care. With Luma, you're getting peace of mind.
